CHAPTER NINETEEN

The first stop they made was after eighteen hours of running. After the intense battle that they had been in, it hadn’t been easy to keep that up, but they needed rest. Morgan could exchange mass, refresh his body and muscles, but the others didn’t have that luxury.

They made camp, and then sat down, each of them feeling down.

“How did we not detect them?” Lucius asked after a while.

Ta’elara bowed her head. “I don’t know. They triggered my spells only after they attacked. That…that shouldn’t have been possible. I should’ve known the moment they approached.”

“Gandiir didn’t see them, either,” Vestella said.

Morgan closed his eyes. They had lost two of their own in that battle, had lost them before they even had a chance to fight. Borodar… Both he and Gandiir were dead before they even knew it, before Morgan himself had detected the attacks. If those shards had targeted him first instead… He could’ve died, too. He’d been in his Base Form, which wouldn’t have survived a hit to the head. If he had been in his Combat Form, maybe.

“They were all over level 70,” Ta’elara said. “There… We are the only people close to it on our continent, at least that I am aware of. If all of their people are like that, we might not be able to fight them.”

“Their power, their abilities,” Lucius started. “Didn’t they feel strange to you?”

Morgan thought about it, then realized the same thing that Lucius had. “The crystals—even the others had crystal-like growths on their weapons, and used them to fight.”

Ta’elara frowned. “I was able to see only one of their Classes. It was…strange, not something that I have seen before. It was called The Way of Crystal Shards.”

Morgan frowned at that. It was a strange name for a Class; though, if he was being honest, his own was strange too. Heart of Metamorphosis was nothing like Raging Berserker or Grand Thundering Sword.

“We lost two of our own,” Ragnor said slowly, his voice tired. “I did this again.”

“You didn’t do anything, Ragnor,” Ta’elara told him firmly. “We came of our own free will, as we did with the Tower. They knew what they were risking; we all know.”

Morgan nodded and looked around, seeing that the others had the same opinion. Ragnor closed his eyes and took a deep breath, then nodded. “I’m sorry,” he said. “You are right. I was just… I feel like my will is eroding, like I am bending under everything that has happened.”

“It’s okay to feel that way—but not now. Now, we need to keep going forward,” Ta’elara told him.

Ragnor nodded, then stood tiredly. “Rest. We’ll head out in two hours.”

Morgan and Ves made their way to a tree and lay down beneath it, resting. They didn’t have the energy to even talk, and so they just held each other. Across from them, under a different tree, he saw Clara and Hexna together. Clara was hugging her close, whispering something to her, kissing her temple gently. For a moment, he was surprised; he hadn’t seen that, hadn’t noticed.
