Chapter Twenty

“You know, that Mr. Peters seemed like a charming person. Right now, I am just glad that his part in all of this is over. I hope I never have to deal with him again,” said Officer Ford.

“What? I thought you were crushing on him.”

“Crushing on him? Please, he is married. He can’t do anything for me.”

“Didn’t you say you think his wife is cheating?” said Officer Ryan.

“Oh, I do believe she is cheating, but they are still married. Her cheating has nothing to do with me contributing to their eventual breakup,” she said. “Plus, he has gotten weird as of late. I don’t know what it is. My last interaction with him made me feel a little uncomfortable.”

“Is that why you called instead of going over there this morning?”

“Yes. I don’t want to be anywhere near him. I knew we had to clear him, so we did that. He is now cleared and I’m done with him. If someone else breaks into his store, Swanson and Biggs can handle it.”

Officer Ford walked to her desk and took a seat. She copied the file that Chauncy sent her to a thumb drive and put it in an envelope. After thinking about it a few more minutes, she stood and walked the envelope over to Officer Ryan’s desk.

“Would you mind taking this to evidence when you head out? I’m going to finish up the paperwork here and try to find some leads on those two dead bodies,” she said.

“Sure thing. I’m going to take another look, I need to add it to my report also.”

“Have fun.”

Officer Ford walked back to her desk. She sat down and took a sip of her coffee. Pictures of the house and the two dead bodies they found were taped to the wall behind her computer monitor. She looked over the pictures.

“Speak to me. What happened to you two?” she thought to herself.

“Ford… something isn’t right with Mr. Peters’ video,” said Officer Ryan.

“What do you mean?” she said as she stood and walked over.

“Well, you are right. According to this, he got home around nine-twenty. He walked in the house, and doesn't leave again throughout the night.”

Officer Ryan replayed the video several times, starting from the beginning and letting it play until Chauncy got in the house.

“Why are you repeating that part?”

“You don’t see it?” said Officer Ryan.

Officer Ford watched it a few more times.

“No, I don’t… what is it?” she said.

“Look again. Where is he coming from?”

“He is walking from the sidewalk. His wife said one of his coworkers picked him up and dropped him off…. wait. Is that his car parked on the street?” Officer Ford said. “Did he actually send me video footage of him leaving his car and walking to the house? This can’t be right.”

“Yeah. His car is parked in the same neighborhood where we found the dead bodies. This video isn't from last night. He must’ve altered the date.”

“You can do that?”

“Man, computers. You can do anything with the right knowledge.
