CHAPTER 21
Tara was lying on the bed reading when the door swung open and Joe and Dog came in, huffing crystals of frozen air before them.
Overjoyed, she ran across the room and threw her arms around the old man.
âOh, Joe, Thank goodness youâre back. I was so lonely without you.â
âWhoa. Iâm covered with snow, youâll freeze.â He gave her a quick hug and pushed her gently away. âYouâre not crying, are you?â
âNo, of course not. Itâs just that three days is a long time. It felt like a week.â Tara gave her eyes a quick swipe and bent down to hug the dog. His tail was waving frantically as he waited to be greeted.
Joe shook his boots off and started unwrapping the layers of scarves that enveloped his face. Ice clung to his white beard.
âNow thatâs a greeting, hey Dog?â
Tara ran to the stove and dipped water into the coffee pot. âHow was your trip? Did you get lots of furs? Where did you sleep? Are you hungry?â
Joe laughed and seated himself in the rocking chair. The dog turned around three times on his bed and dropped with a sigh.
The old man watched Tara as she pulled a paper bag of potatoes towards her. âMy trip was fine. Dog and I walked many miles and saw lots of snow.â He shook his head âNot many animals around though. That must be why those wolves were hanging around. Itâs too cold and all the rabbits and mice are hiding out.â
Tara looked up from her task âSo no furs?â
âA few.â He leaned back. âJust not as many as I expected since I havenât been out for a while. But, never mind that, how did you manage?â
âI was fine.â She poured water over the potatoes and placed them on the stove. âYou need a clock. And a radio. It was way too quiet.â
He laughed, âI like quiet. Thereâs a radio around here somewhere. I just never felt the need. Iâll find it for you before I go out again.â
Tara was putting a deer steak into the frying pan. She stopped what she was doing and turned her blue eyes towards him. âYouâre going again?â
âOf course. Those traps have to be checked every week for sure.â He reached over and started to his feet. âI must say, itâs much nicer to come home to dinner and a smile than a cold, dark cabin.â
He looked at the woodpile. âDid you go outside at all?â
âI emptied the bucket and filled the tub with snow a few times.â
âIâll carry some more wood tomorrow and make bread.â He reached for the coffee pot. âLooks like this is ready. And that venison smells good.â
They chatted as they enjoyed their meal. Joe told her about the lean-to he had built in the woods. Tara mentioned the dream that she had woken from.
âIt was so real.â She laid down her fork. âMy mom was calling me.â Tears welled up. âSheâs looking for me. I thought they would just go to my grandparentâs farm and forget me.
