CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

“I’M EXHAUSTED.” SAMANTHA collapsed into the bed as Ethan closed the door to their room.

Ethan sat in the bed across from her. “I thought you got some decent sleep on the drive over here.”

She shook her head and yawned. “Too bumpy. Every time we hit a pothole or drove on some God-awful road I could have sworn I felt my uterus bobbling.”

“Is that normal?” He scrunched his nose. “It doesn’t sound normal.”

“How would I know? I’m not some kind of expert on pregnancy.” The words came out harsher than she’d intended. “Sorry. I’m cranky. Hungry and tired. And once again, our lives have been turned upside down, leaving us no choice but to go into hiding.”

“Well,” Ethan ambled over to the table to the right of the door. “I can’t do much about the being on the run part, but there are snacks over here: granola, some fruit, cheeses, crackers. It’s not much...” He trailed off.

Samantha tilted her head in his direction. “What’s wrong?”

He turned to her. “There’s no cups. Only bottles of blood and surprisingly, a few bottled waters.”

“No cups?” It had been hours—too many hours—since she’d had any blood. The nausea she’d been so excited to get rid of had returned. The last thing Samantha wanted to do was drink from the vein—not with the side effects they’d experienced last time. “Um...what if we empty one of the bottles and rinse it out in the bathroom? I would use a water bottle but not sure how easy that would be seeing how small the opening is. The blood bottle is considerably larger.”

She started to get up but Ethan motioned for her to sit. “I’ve got it. You want something to eat while you wait?”

The thought of eating made the queasiness worse. “No thanks. Maybe after.”

With a bottle of blood in hand, Ethan disappeared into the bathroom, leaving Samantha to wait. She changed into her nightgown, which was nothing more than an oversized t-shirt, and got into bed.

Samantha knew he’d only been in there a couple of minutes, but each second that passed was pure torture. The scent of the blood being dumped—as unappetizing as she knew it would taste—made her mouth water.

“Ethan?” She cleared her throat. “Almost done?”

He swayed as he entered the room with a clean bottle in hand, his face a light shade of green. “I’m not going to lie, knowing that bottle contained human blood—”

“Are you okay? You look awful! Can I get you something?” Samantha rushed to his side. She was an insensitive, horrible female incapable of seeing past her own needs. No wonder she struggled to find a decent male. “Ethan, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking.”

He opened a water bottle and took a long drink. “You’re fine. It didn’t even cross my mind until I was nearly done.”

She dropped her head. “I’m the worst. Selfish and inconsiderate.”

Using his index finger, he tipped her head so they were face to face. “None of that is true. It wasn’t too long ago you risked your life—risked everything—to help me find out the truth about Evie.
