The sound of the ocean filled Liria’s ears as her raft was slowly carried toward shore. The sky was covered in popcorn, and the surf was littered with hotel furniture. Lee Harvey sat on a floating table, his ankles dipped in the foam. He was wearing a conical green party hat, and he smiled, blowing a noisemaker, the paper tube unfurling in her direction like a butterfly tongue. “Welcome to the party, Jet Ski!” he said.

Liria smiled and crawled off the mattress into the water, which closed around her in a rush of warmth. It wasn’t wet. It was like blankets. She swam toward Lee Harvey, but he blew the noisemaker again and his table spun further out to sea. Liria saw a shore in the distance, lined with tall buildings wreathed in flashing lights. A neon sign advertised “Hot Sandwich” in huge, blinking letters.

“Lee Harvey! Come back!” Liria kicked out toward him desperately, but she felt someone grab her arm.

She whirled, gasping. There in the water with her was Justin, the odd boy she’d met in the park. He smiled sadly at her, treading water effortlessly. He looked out over the water, toward Lee Harvey. Her friend was fifty yards away now.

Justin frowned. “You don’t want to go there. It’s not your place. Too much hot sandwich.”

Liria gazed at the far-away form of Lee Harvey, floating on his table. He was almost to the other side. She’d never reach him now. The invisible hands of the current tugged at her legs, and her heart ached as her head slipped below the water into confused darkness.
