Ethanâs chin sank down to his chest. His eyes stared at the floor. He knew that his father was right. He also knew there was nothing he could say to make it any better.
* * *
For the next few days, Ethan tried not to think about hunting. All he could do was hope his father would give him another chance.
A few nights later, when Ethanâs father came home from work, he had a surprise. He smiled at Ethan.
âEthan, Iâll pick you up from school tomorrow afternoon,â he said. âYou need to pack a bag tonight so that youâre ready.â
âReady for what?â Ethan asked.
âReady for a hunting trip,â his father said.
Ethanâs mouth dropped open. âAre you serious?â he asked, feeling shocked. âYouâre taking me hunting?â
Dad looked closely at Ethan. âI did not say I was taking you hunting,â he said quietly. âI said I was taking you on a hunting trip.â
âI donât get it,â Ethan said. âWhatâs the difference?â
âIâm taking you along. But you wonât be hunting,â his father explained. âWeâll drive up tomorrow, and get to the cabin by tomorrow night. Youâll come along with me on Saturday morning when I go out to hunt.â
Ethan thought about it. He was excited to go on the trip, even if he didnât get to hunt.
âOkay,â he said slowly. âThat sounds pretty good, I guess.â
âYou need to see a real hunter hunt,â Dad said. âThen you can see how a real hunter treats the game with respect. You can see how respectful a real hunter is to the land, too.â
Ethan was disappointed that he wasnât going to be hunting. But he wanted his dad to trust him again with a gun. He had to really learn the Hunterâs Code.
âItâs not as good as really hunting,â Ethan said. âBut I know itâs important. And Iâm excited to go to the cabin.â
âGreat,â Dad said. âWait in the parking lot after school tomorrow. Get some sleep tonight.â He left, shutting the door quietly behind him.
