CHAPTER 17
RED LETTERS SPELLED out THE MULE with a blue-lit logo of the pack animal trudging under the weight of side bags. Quay said, âYou know, I did interview people here when Elsie went missing. Weâre a small town, but I take my responsibility seriously.â
âI know, Jake. Iâm only here because new things turned up in my area. And I havenât interviewed anyone with regards to Pauline. And that means that McAdams and I have to go back to the beginning.â
âI just want you to know that I havenât been sitting on my ass.â
Decker placed a hand on the manâs shoulder. âMcAdams and I work in a small town. We know how dedicated we are. Iâm sure youâre the same way. Letâs get this done together.â
âYeah, well â¦â Quay opened the door. âThanks.â
Inside was dark as befit a bar. The floor space held a pool table, currently unoccupied, with about ten small tables around the perimeter. The bar was U-shaped, and the stools looked recently upholstered. Three men and two women took up space, munching on bowls of mini pretzels that sat on the countertop. A white-aproned bartender stood in front of shelves holding a wide selection of libations. There was also a chalkboard featuring a sizable menu from the kitchen.
The bartender was rotund and red-facedâmaybe mid-fifties. He looked at Quay and nodded. âWhatâs up, Sarge?â
âThe usual, Jim. Trying to nail bad guys.â Quay made introductions.
Upon hearing the detectivesâ names, Jim said, âThen this is business?â
âYep, but itâs hot outside. Iâll take a beer.â Quay looked at Decker and McAdams, both shaking their heads no. âYou donât mind?â
Decker said, âNot at all.â He pulled out a picture and laid it on the bar top. He spoke to Jim. âHave you ever seen this man?â
Jim gave it a quick glance as he pulled the beer tap. âLooks familiar. Who is he?â
âMaybe youâve seen him with this woman?â Out came the picture of Corbett.
âThatâs Pauline.â He let the suds run over the rim of the glass, then gave it to Quay.
âEver see them together?â Decker asked.
âMaybe like a while back ⦠like three months ago.â
âThat would be about right,â Decker said. âWhat can you tell me about them?â
âI gotta remember first.â He wiped his hands on his apron and appeared to be thinking. âThey sat at the bar. They were here for maybe an hour. They were making the rounds.â
âMeaning?â McAdams asked.
âTheyâd been drinking before they came in. I could smell it.â
Quay sipped his beer. âBehaving badly?â
âNothing out of the ordinary. Paulineâs a friendly gal. Sheâd talk to anyone.â His eyes were far away, bringing up a memory that was still etched in his mind. âHe was quieter, but not by much. I know that Paulineâs missing. The sergeant and I had a conversation about it, right?â
âWe did,â Quay said. âYou said that Elsie and Pauline would come here.â
Jim said, âPauline used to be a regular, but after she hooked up with Elsie, the visits werenât so often. Theyâd pop in ⦠play pool for about an hour.
