Chapter Twenty-Four
âNot it!â
Zelma and Nico both looked at Elsa in surprise. In response, the monster hunter shrugged, removing a slender finger from the tip of her nose.
âJust beating gitface over there to it.â
âDid she just insult me?â Deadpool asked. âI think she just insulted me. Oh, and also?â he added, touching his own nose. âNot it!â
âOf course not,â Zelma said sharply. âNobodyâs it. We havenât even decided weâre doing this.â Then she paused, taking in the expressions on what she could see of the othersâ faces. None of them seemed to have nearly the same number of misgivings as she did. â⦠or have we?â
âClosing it behind them wonât be enough?â Nico asked, ignoring the librarianâs question in favor of her own. It was still an answer, though. One Zelma didnât much care for.
She slouched in her seat, scratching at her temples, where unwashed hair and beanie met in a damp line. She was on edge and nervous, much the same way she had felt when sheâd cheated on her driverâs test and was scared to death that the DMV employees were going to find out. Not that she was being dishonest with anyone here; sheâd been transparent about both her concerns and her own limitations. But she still had that horrible sense of doing something she shouldnât be doing, knowing all the while that discovery and dire consequences werenât far off.
âI donât know,â she complained, aware that she sounded like a testy teenager, but not sure what to do about it. She felt like a grumpy teen, one whose life was continually being upended by people who just didnât get it. And in this case, what they didnât âgetâ was that Zelma had no real idea what she was doing, but they still expected her to have all the answers, and that terrified her. âThere have to be spellcasters who survived among the infected besides just Wanda. Maybe their hunger would keep them too distracted to magic a way out of the timestream, assuming we figured out a way to get them to enter it in the first place. Maybe not. Elsa?â
âEh? Sorry, I didnât quite catch that; I was too distracted by hunger.â
âSeriously?â Nico asked, a reproachful look on her face. Deadpool giggled behind his hand.
âAlmost always, darling,â Elsa replied, smiling, before turning her attention back to Zelma. âAt this point, unless they have an arrangement like mine and Wadeâs, if you dangle a bloody flesh carrot in front of them, they wonât be sane enough to notice thereâs a stick in the offing. Of course, the carrotâs going to have to be alive to really catch their interest, which may be a bit of a problem.â
The gears in Zelmaâs brain were starting to turn now, mostly of their own accord. She was a pragmatist and problem-solver by nature, even when sheâd much rather just be an observer. Or, better yet, not see any of it because she had her head buried in a book.
But her days of hiding in the library had ended when Doc got infected.
