Much to Flint’s annoyance, Gwen darted after Ed and Lyra before the gates could close. Then, when he tried to call her back, Tobi disappeared after her, whining audibly. The soldiers operating the door froze. They looked hesitantly between the opening and Flint.

“Back!” he yelled but got no response.

When Flint took a step toward the gate, Winona grabbed his bicep. “Don’t,” she said. “You’re the fort’s commander. We can’t risk you heading out in the field.”

“My pack’s out there, love. As long as I’m in the field with them, I’ll be fine.” His words didn’t sway her. Instead, she tightened her hold on him. Flint placed a hand over hers and squeezed. “I won’t be out for long. As soon as I sense Gwen, I’ll compel her to come back with me. Please.” He continued when she didn’t let go. “I’ve got the tools to survive, and Bjorn will stick by me. The first sign of trouble and I’ll rush back.”

Winona loosened her hold. “There’s an army at our gates, you know. They’re not just sitting out there.”

“Yes, but the wind is blowing toward them right now. They won’t risk setting these mushrooms ablaze.” Flint wrestled himself free. “Let me do this. If I fall, you and the rest of the council take joint control of the [City Planning Table] and the fort. Alais will take Seven’s place and Adam will take mine.”

Lights flashed from the Heartstone up the hill, and something hummed deep inside Flint. He guessed the ancient pillar had heard his words and accepted his intent. Much to his surprise, Winona slapped him.

“You’re a fool!” she hissed before taking a step back and glancing at the others around them. “Go. Get your pack and come back alive. That’s an order from your chief defense minister.”

Flint kissed her before sprinting out of the gate with Bjorn at his heels. The gates slowly clicked shut behind them as they headed into the giant mushrooms’ darkness. Before progressing further, Flint used [Shape] to create three stone spheres no bigger than his head. He transformed each of them into a totem, then cast [Builder’s Ward] and [Animate Totem Golem] on them individually.

“Stay close and protect me.” Flint hoped once his abilities reached higher ranks, they’d gain the power to follow more complicated instructions. For the time being, the spheres would have to serve as light and obstacles in case anyone tried to sneak up on him. Given his company, Flint doubted anyone would get around Bjorn. The big dog’s aura and girth made him the perfect bodyguard. Hopefully, the [Totem of Windfury] would disrupt all projectiles shot at them too.

The fact that the corpses, gore, and blood had disappeared made Flint squirm. Thick, spongy veins had sprouted in their place. They connected the giant mushrooms in a visceral crimson network. Flint couldn’t help but wonder whether the monstrous flora was a natural existence in the fae lands or if some neighboring disk, or fae mages, had created them for war.

Alais and Winona had mentioned dark fae in passing, and apparently they had a grove heart under their control.
