âI need to start going home at night. One of these days, Iâm going to be late.â Itâs too late to do anything with my hair, but I pin it up on the sides, away from my eyes, and let the waves hang loose around my shoulders. Iâm lucky to have hair thatâs easy to manage, but I would like to spend more than five minutes on it. After all, Iâm going to work, and I want to look nice.
Most people think that because itâs usually kids who come to the library, it doesnât matter how polished I look. I think itâs more important. Kids are impressionable, and theyâre also little parrots. They mimic what they see and hear. We are their role models.
When I see kids who are misbehaving, I know thereâs more to it than that. Something could be happening at home or at school. What seems like small problems to adults are a big deal for the little guys. Losing a best friend because of a tiff or having them move away seems insignificant to parents, but it can be a huge problem for a child.
I like to take my time to get to know the kids who walk through our door. I love it when they come from the local schools. I get to learn their interests and what kind of books excite them. From fairy princesses and ogres to autobiographies from sports heroes, thereâs something for each of them.
Today, we have Mrs. Bladeâs class coming back. We started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, and today, weâre going to get through the next few chapters.
âBring some of your stuff here,â Caleb says.
I stop dead in my tracks. âPardon?â
âIâll clean out a drawer.â
I know I sound like an idiot when I repeat, âYouâll clean out a drawer?â
âYeah, babe. No big deal.â He shrugs and walks out the bedroom door, like itâs a natural thing to invite someone into your personal space. I donât know what to make of it, and perhaps now isnât the time to ask questions, seeing as how Iâve got to get over to my place.
âCaleb, Iâm heading out,â I call as I make my way to the front door. Before I can open it, heâs by my side and kissing me. This man has a power over me that I just canât fight. I melt like a puddle in his arms.
âYour place tonight. I donât like that you have to rush around in the morning,â he says. He notices how I like an unhurried morning and is finding ways to make it easier on me.
âThank you. Iâll cook tonight.â
He cups my cheek and slides his nose against mine. âLater, baby.â
