Chapter 13

McGrath watched the small party before her walking across the snow, deep and thick, towards the sea beyond. Through a mass of swirling white, she could see the breakers, the result of a churned-up sea that had been whipped by the wind these last few days and which showed no sign of abating. One of the options before them, at least potentially, was to take a boat for help. Looking at the waves and with no known master of the sea among them, that might be a forlorn idea.

Aldo Brace was marching ahead, but Hope had noticed one thing about him since they had first been introduced. That was his attitude and how it had changed to her. At first, when they had been on that small team with Macaulay and Mrs Johnston, he had been more than cordial, like someone who was deeply interested in her but who had a previous attachment that held him in check. But the attitude had changed sharply and she tried recalling what she had said to make it happen.

It was the quip about having a girlfriend or something like that, a statement that implied she might have more to her sexuality than just a desire to couple with men. And it had not been that strong a quip either. Whatever had happened, she was making sure she would keep an eye on him as he was a strong brute. The rugby player was well-toned and she had no idea if he knew how to fight or subdue, so she would be watching carefully.

Anders Larsen was another matter entirely. The man was a wreck at the moment and while she understood Macleod’s idea of sending her out with two opposites who were unlikely to be in league with each other, he could have given her someone more useful.

The trip to the boat was said to be less than a mile by Mr Smith, the chef, and Hope was going to be only too delighted not to have to be out in this storm for long. After leaving the house, they made their way past where the helicopter had landed and onto a beach. This was going to be the easiest route according to Mr Smith as the snow looked like it had blocked up the roads and someone unfamiliar with the terrain might easily miss where the road was running.

Once on the snow-covered beach, the party walked close to where the tide was coming in as this meant a thin line of snow, the tide having removed some of the earlier falls from previous days. As the tide rolled in, the smaller crashes on the beach overwhelmed by the wind and larger breakers beyond, Hope felt a peace despite the biting cold. There was a wild beauty about this place even in the harshest of times.

Hope watched Anders Larsen stumble along, looking desperately from side to side as Aldo Brace seemed to quicken his pace. She stepped up and took Larsen by the shoulders, imploring him to hurry up.
