The Seeker

There was a second loud shriek, but this one was clearly a cry of laughter. It ended with a loud shout of, “Muncie!” Zenith looked up to see a second humongous raven flying toward them very quickly. This second bird had a long, fluttering scarf around its neck, the same emerald green as the Scribe’s vest. As he drew close, the second bird dove sharply toward the ground. The force behind his own landing seemed to surprise him, and he blundered toward them, waving his wings wildly.

Zenith and Kreeble backed away quickly. The Scribe scooped up his treasured iridescent chalk, then hopped out of the way as the other raven barreled into the chalk piles. The Scribe croaked angrily. “Hugh! I’ve just sorted those. Oh, if you weren’t my brother, I’d have you before the Inquisitor on charges!”

The other raven brushed the multicolored chalk dust off his feathers. “Sorry, Muncie, I’m just so excited. I’ve flown straight from the village of Threadbare with the most delicious Details. It seems that young Lorelei has finally had her babies. But instead of twins, she’s had triplets, and the father is none too pleased—”

“Slow down and hold on. Slow down and hold on.” The Scribe placed his special chalk back on the desk. “Let me find the proper color.” He examined the batch of chalk strewn on the ground, sifting through it with one foot. “Lime green is the color for Threadbare. Oh, where is it?” He fluttered his wing at his brother while he continued to look. “Introduce yourself to our guests, Hugh. The soft, fleshy one is from Terra Firmament.”

“A Firman, you say.” Hugh half flew, half stumbled across the short distance to Zenith. “Well, it looks like I’ve been missing some very important Details right here at home!”

“Missing things and misplacing things. Missing things and misplacing things,” muttered Muncie as he continued sifting through the chalk. His weary voice suggested this was an ongoing problem. Zenith could easily imagine Apogee adopting the same tone when haranguing him about his own shortcomings.

Hugh ignored his brother’s testiness and continued in his own upbeat manner. “A pleasure to meet you.” He bowed his head. “I am the Seeker of GrahBhag, collector of knowledge. But everybody calls me Hugh.” The bird lifted his head, tilted it at Zenith, and waited. “Don’t be rude, Firman, introduce yourself!”

“Uh, my name is Zenith Maelstrom. Pleased to meet you. I’m trying to find my—”

“Aha! Knew it. Speaks Anglish. He’s from Angleland.” He gave Zenith an appraising look. “Or maybe Fireland . . .”

“Don’t be dim,” sighed Muncie. “Listen to his accent. He’s clearly from Merry-Caw.” The Scribe bent down and picked a lime green piece of chalk up off the ground. He turned to the desk, pushed Zenith’s chalkboard aside, and held the chalk over one of the other two. He cleared his throat and spoke. “Seeker of GrahBhag! Speak the Details concerning Lorelei of Threadbare so that the Scribe may increase the knowledge of the Collectory!”

Hugh flew with enthusiasm over to his brother and slammed into the side of the desk.
