19.

New Jersey, USA

His mother had promised to send him a plane, and the text message Devlin received confirmed it was ready. It would have to wait because first there were things he needed to attend to.

The situation he was in should have insisted he abandon all ties to this country, but even with the terrible and unexpected fear that had blossomed, Devlin’s desires and addiction won through. There was something he needed to fetch before he would leave this land for good, something too precious to be casually abandoned. He’d worked too hard over recent years to leave behind the tokens of his enduring excellence.

The traffic on the drive back to New Jersey had been mercifully forgiving, the journey from Washington taking over four hours. No radio had entertained him on that journey, instead his churning thoughts had tried to gather some sense behind what had happened. For most of his life he had been of the belief that this world had been put here for him, designed specifically so he could abandon himself to his perverse and horrific pleasures. In such a world, there should have been no way for anyone to harm him, but they had.

The wound by then had all but healed, although it was infected with a maddening itch that constantly drew Devlin’s attention. All through the drive he had scratched at it, swearing at its insistent presence and cursing the Russian bitch who had shot him. It wasn’t right that she be left alive after that affront to his natural dominance. Devlin should have been consumed with the need for vengeance, for retribution, but instead he fled. He told himself he was following his mother’s wishes, but the inner self, the one that whispers to us in the deep black of night, knew the real reason.

Deep down he dreaded a second encounter. The two Russians knew a means to hurt him, and such knowledge on how to inflict pain had always been a one-way street. He was the ultimate predator and there should be no human who could match him.

How naïve he had been all these years. Why hadn’t anybody warned him?

Sitting in his basement now, Devlin looked at the unfinished sculpture he had painstakingly constructed. For perhaps the first time in years, he wasn’t naked, which in itself felt abhorrent. Before venturing down here, he had changed into his finest clothes, to make himself presentable for his mother. The combat attire that had saved his life lay discarded upstairs, no longer needed. Having thwarted the assassination attempt, Devlin felt he was no longer in danger. Devlin might have felt different if it had been Americans who had come gunning for him, but arrogance and self-deception were persistent bedfellows.

He would pay dearly for that decision.

He had grown comfortable in this life, complacent, the days and weeks sneaking by as he barely aged, the rest of the world of interest when murder and the nourishment of his sick perversion were demanded. For too long the universe had let him do as he pleased, offering up no form of challenge.
