Etta and Dora were sitting under the stars in the garden of their accommodation. It was a warm night and fireflies were dancing around them as they had left the lights off to enjoy the clear sky. Leon was snoring loudly, no doubt dreaming of hunts and fights in which he was the unconquered hero, and Milla looked at him with her lovely eyes full of admiration.

Etta, for her part, was still wide awake, her brain working frantically, trying to understand whether the findings of the day had any relevance to their sleuthing.

“I never suspected there was something between Georgina and Philip. But as there was, isn’t it strange that she should break it off without good reason?”

“You didn’t suspect?” said Dora in surprise. “It’s been obvious to me all along.”

No matter how analytical my grey cells are, thought Etta, when it comes to matters of the heart, Dora is always one step ahead.

“They’d make a splendid couple. I think she just got cold feet.”

“I take it you’re one of Georgina’s supporters, along with Henrietta and Mrs Bauer.”

“Well, yes, in a sense…”

“But in another sense, isn’t it all quite alarming?”

“Alarming?”

“Yes, we have this girl, Henrietta, who hated Colette. All she wants is for her brother to marry her best friend, Georgina.”

“Etta, please! Will you stop implying what I think you’re implying – not that sweetheart…”

“That sweetheart who can use a gun, and is reputed to have quite a talent for it. And despite being the bridesmaid, she was nowhere near the bride and groom at the moment of the wedding cake cutting. Isn’t that unusual?”

“I hope it’s just the fact that it’s the witching hour giving you such gloomy thoughts. As for me, I’m starting to feel sleepy and I don’t want to linger on strange ideas before I go to bed. I’d rather enjoy a short walk to the pond; the moon is bright, and I must confess, I’ve always wished to walk in the forest at night, but have never dared to. Do you want to come along?”

Etta did not. She felt she was close to some kind of conclusion, or at least a turning point in their sleuthing, and the chaise longue was just perfect for contemplation. But the magic words ‘come along’ had awoken the dozing hound as if a gunshot had startled him out of his wildest dreams. His ears instantly pricked up and he rose from the ground, stretching his back and wagging his tail.

“Are we still here?” he seemed to be saying. “Come on, it’s time to go.”

“For this chap, there’s never a reason to stay,” said Dora, chuckling. “If a stranger were to see him now, they’d think he’d been held prisoner for weeks and not been galloping around this vast property all day long.”

The dog pointed in the direction of the Peacocks’ House.

“Again?” wondered Etta. “What’s his interest in that old hut?”

“Napoleon! We’re going in the other direction, towards the small pond,” Dora explained. “It’s not polite to wake the peacocks.
