CASE STUDY: SUSAN FASANO

Co-owner of Hamptons West, a chic boutique of cool home goods in West Sayville, New York, Susan Fasano says this dining table vignette in her home (featured on pages 105–107) symbolizes her perfectly. “My farm table was a great find that I gaily dragged back from Florida. I love my tray so much because my brother, who is a trained chef, taught himself carpentry and made it from reclaimed wood. My chair covers are made from old curtain panels. The Depression-era glass is a collection that my mother gave me before she passed away. And the light fixture was a quick DIY piece from Home Depot that I painted white and removed the shades. A transformation and collection of simple things that make me happy!

“Although my initial interest in weathered items and distressed furniture began with, ‘Look at what nature has produced,’ that led to a curiosity of its provenance. Where did it come from? Who may have handled it? Or, look at what someone has put curbside for me to rescue and give new life,” says Fasano.
