"Nick, get into the carriage, please," said Jonathan, very tightly. "Sit beside Cindy. You know your lines?"
"Of course, I know my lines," Nick said, as he very casually went striding over to the carriage. "How hard is it to say, 'I love you, Ms. London,' and 'ooh, the orphans are so cute?â"
Jonathan stared coldly at him, but kept silent.
Still holding his large paper cup full of coffee, Nick attempted to climb up into the white Landau. Cindy was already sitting on the rear seat and she pulled her feet in close so he could get past her, since it was very crowded back there. The two crewmembers in the front seat were completely packed in with all of their equipment and they still had to control the camera and the unwieldy sound boom.
But Nick came barging in and immediately stumbled over the camera operator's foot. The actor spun around and caught himself, dropping into the seat beside Cindy, but she only lifted her hands in horror and looked down at her skirt.
"Nick! Look what you've done!"
"What? What did I do? It's so crowded in this thing, there's not enough room to change your mind. What are you yelling about?"
"Look at my clothes!"
And sure enough, there was a wide spattering of dark coffee droplets all across Cindy's tan suede skirt.
"How can I get a wardrobe change now? We're completely ready to go. We can't stop and redo all of this setup with all the extras and the horses and the crew and everything else."
She turned an icy glare onto Nick Thorne. "Oh, I could justâ"
"Ms. Carmen," Mae ventured, "thereâs a lap robe under the seat, right where you're sitting."
"There's ⦠a what?"
Mae smiled. "A lap robe. Like a blanket made of heavy wool. It's for keeping warm while riding in a carriage or a sleigh when it's cold. When the horse gets moving, it can get pretty breezy back there."
"Oh, of course."
"You could put that one over your skirt for now, if you like. Then you wouldn't have to go and change."
Immediately, Cindy leaned down and found the folded green-and-red plaid lap robe. Shaking it open, she held it up and looked closely at it.
"This will be perfect. It's so pretty. It even looks like Christmas, especially with the gold embroidery on it. What does it say? Oh, Tipperary Carriage Company, of course."
"Imported from Ireland," said Mae. "Made to order especially for us."
Cindy quickly spread the lap robe across her knees and pulled it up to her waist, hiding the coffee spill on her skirt.
"Mae, you're a lifesaver," she said. "It's so pretty, I would have wanted to use it anyway. And so warm."
"You're welcome," said Mae.
Just please keep Mr. Thorne's coffee cup away from that genuine imported special-order woolen lap robe, if at all possible.
The young assistant director, Dex, walked over to the front wheel of the carriage and looked up at Mae.
"Jonathan wants me to ride up there with you," he said. "I've got an earpiece connected to my phone.
