Gollum

Bilbo meets Gollum after he escapes from the goblins. Gollum lives alone beside an underground lake, and has been shaped by these surroundings. He is described as short, old, dark and slimy. In addition to his repulsive appearance, he is a deceitful, cruel creature who clearly suffers from schizophrenia, and whose origins are shrouded in mystery.

As soon as he lays eyes on Bilbo, he instantly dreams of eating him. In order to do so, he suggests a game of riddles – if Bilbo wins, Gollum will show him the way out of the caves, but if Bilbo loses, he will become Gollum’s next meal. And so begins the fool’s game between the two characters, with Bilbo eventually proving himself cleverer than Gollum’s trickery. Thanks to the magic ring that was Gollum’s only possession, and which Bilbo unwittingly stole from him, the hobbit is able to evade his clutches, leaving Gollum alone in his despair. Losing the ring is an absolute tragedy in Gollum’s eyes, as he has developed a real obsession with it. Realising that he has been tricked, he swears eternal hatred for Bilbo, which will eventually have very real consequences in The Lord of the Rings.
