âI knew it!â God declared. âCase closed!â
âClosed case!â DeeDee barked.
âWhat do I do? What do I do?â I asked worriedly. Griswald had never given any instructions about what to do if we actually caught someone in the act. âShould I call the police? Should I try calling Griswald? Am I supposed to call Wolfe?â
âYou should breathe,â God suggested. âAnd wait for Nat. Heâs the pro at stolen stuff. Follow his lead.â
I nodded. âGood advice.â
âAdvice good!â DeeDee confirmed.
We sat there; our six eyes laser-focused on the door of the pawn shop.
âWhat do you think is happening?â I murmured aloud.
âMagnifying glasses are out. Wikipedia pages are being perused,â God replied. âNo doubt, not wanting to miss out on a good deal, the reputable owner is calling in an expert acquaintance, who just so happens to be in the area, to authenticate the egg.â
I shook my head. âYou really watch too much tv.â
âWhat do you think is happening?â he shot back.
âHaggling,â I muttered. âItâs what always happens. Haggling and one-upmanship.â
âMaybe in theââ God began.
âNat!â DeeDee barked excitedly, drowning out the lizard.
Nat jogged toward the car. I leaned over to push the door open for him.
He slid inside.
âShould we call the cops?â I asked.
He shook his head.
âWhy not?â
âBecause itâs a fake.â
âWhatâs a fake?â
âThe egg.â
âCarterâs trying to pawn a fake Fabergé?â I asked, dumbfounded. âWhy?â
He shrugged.
âAm confused I,â DeeDee panted.
âWe all are,â God told her. âWhat on earth is going on?â
âYouâre sure itâs a fake?â I asked Nat.
âDid the butler strike you as a stupid man?â was his response.
âNo.â
âWell, only an idiot would try to pawn a Fabergé egg.â Nat leaned back in his seat, scowling.
âA fence!â God exclaimed. âYouâd need a fence for something that valuable.â
I sat back in my seat. âWe have to tell Griswald about this.â
âI already texted him,â Nat revealed. He glanced at his phone. âNo response.â
âThey probably have him doped on pain killers,â I muttered. âEven if we could get in touch, thereâs no guarantee heâd be lucid. We shouldââ
I never finished my sentence because, suddenly, Nat was kissing me. Or, at least, his mouth was pressed over mine, silencing me. I tried to push him away, but heâd pinned both of my arms.
Strangely, I didnât panic. Maybe because I sensed no desire or violence in him. Maybe because Iâd so recently declared I trusted him.
DeeDee, however, reacted differently. âProtect?â she growled.
âDo not protect, DeeDee,â God ordered sharply. âAbsolutely do not.â
Nat eased off me slightly. âSidebottom,â he whispered. âDonât move.â
âHeâs right,â God said from the dash. âSidebottom just walked past.â
I gave a slight nod, signaling my understanding.
âThe danger is outside the car,â the lizard told the dog. âNat will not hurt Maggie.â
I sensed the dogâs slow retreat.
âMister Lloyds of London is talking to two men.â
I tilted my head to the side slightly, so I could peer past Natâs massive shoulder. âHeâs talking to a couple of guys just outside the store entrance,â I whispered.
Nat leveraged himself away from me slowly. We watched Sidebottom conferring with the men in suits.
âCops,â Nat said softly.
