“I need a favor,” I said as soon as my old friend answered his phone.

“Name it,” he replied without hesitation.

“Can you go with me to visit my mom?”

“Sure.”

“Now?”

“Right now?”

“Right now.”

There was a long silence, and then he said, “I can be there in half an hour.”

“Thank you.”

I hustled the girls inside the house and got them cleaned up, telling them they were going to see Grandma Mary.

“She gets confused sometimes,” Alicia told me as she washed her hands.

“I know, Sweetheart,” I replied, swallowing the lump that rose in my throat. I’d asked Zeke to join me because he had a calming effect on my mother and I really, really needed a couple of lucid moments with her to figure out what had happened with Taryn.

By the time we reached the facility, Zeke was standing near the front door. He grinned when he saw my nieces. “Hi, girls!”

“Hi, Uncle Zeke!” they replied in unison.

He grinned with pride. “I’ve never been an uncle before.”

“Well, aren’t you lucky to be one for the best two nieces ever,” I asked with as much cheerful enthusiasm as I could muster.

“I sure am.” He searched my face as he took Alicia’s hand. “Everything okay?”

I gave him a tight, wordless smile in reply.

Signing in to the facility, I took a moment to peruse the pages of the log, looking to see if Holloway had been in recently. It appeared she had not.

As we made our way to my mother’s room, we were watched with interest by both patients and staff. I made a point of avoiding eye contact with all.

The door was propped open. My mother was sitting by the window, staring out, fiddling with pieces of multiple colors of wire that were lined up on the sill.

“Hi, Mom,” I called out tentatively.

She turned and blinked. “Hello?”

Her greeting was that of one stranger to another. Disappointment slapped me in the face like a wet rag.

Then, she smiled with recognition. “Zeke! Come in, come in. Who have you brought with you?”

“It’s your daughter, Maggie,” Zeke told her, striding into the room with confidence. “And your granddaughters Katie and Alicia.”

The girls smiled and waved.

Thankfully, Mom waved back. “Look how big you’re getting!”

I couldn’t tell if she knew them, or if that was just something adults say when they see little kids. I did know that she hadn’t recognized me.

While the girls told her all about feeding the crows and the donkey and the pig, Zeke sidled over to me. “Don’t take it personally,” he whispered.

“I’m not,” I told him with a heavy sigh. “It’s just that she’s not going to be able to help me in this state.”

“Help you with what?”

“I need to ask her about that mysterious visitor she had, Taryn Solloway…or Holloway.”

“The one Susan’s obsessed with?”

I nodded.

“We can try. Do you want me to do it?”

“Would you?”

“I’m here to help,” he told me.

“Girls, can you just read quietly for a little while so we can talk to Grandma Mary?” I asked, offering them the books I’d brought as a distraction.
