The German Reich Statistical Office estimated that 10,289 people had been killed during the first raid. Only twelve RAF planes failed to return. A report by a local Hamburg police commissioner made grim reading:

The streets were covered with hundreds of bodies. Mothers with children, men young and old, burned, charred or uninjured, clothed or naked in waxen pallor like store window mannequins, lay in every position, calm and peaceful or cramped, the agony of their death on their faces. Shelters presented the same picture even more gruesome in its effect, since it showed here and there the last desperate struggle against a merciless fate.155
