The massive south front at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, with a Baroque-style grand entrance stair. The young Adam arranged it so that guests’ first sight inside was an astounding, monumental marble hall

The Adam style would even reach Russia, via a young Brit called Charles Cameron. Having read his book about Roman thermae, Catherine the Great summoned Charles Cameron to Russia to reconstruct her summer residence in Tsarskoe Selo. Of all her country residences this was the one that she preferred.

Having moved away from the heavy, rather dour classical country house that had had so much success in England, Adam felt he could congratulate himself:

‘The massive entablature… the ponderous compartment ceiling… the tabernacle frame, almost the only species of ornament… formerly known in this country are now universally exploded. In their place we have adopted a beautiful variety, gracefully formed, delicately enriched and arranged with propriety and skill.’
