Clough has the scent of victory. He and strike partner Lee Chapman contrive to win the ball in their own half from a dawdling Luton midfielder. Clough wins the tackle, Chapman has the ball and he feeds it wide right to Tommy Gaynor, who motors upfield. The break is on.

Clough runs forward. Chapman does the same but Webb is the furthest forward. Gaynor spies him and sweeps a deliciously curving ball over the back-pedalling defence and into his path 12 yards from goal. With one touch of his left boot, he brings it under control.

With another touch of his right, the ball is beyond Sealey and Forest are well on their way to claiming their first major piece of silverware since the miracle years: the first for Clough without his mate Peter Taylor, the first for Clough senior with his lad in the team. From Clough winning the ball to Webb scoring, a mere 12 seconds elapse.
