Chapter 9
A week later, Pattie had to call Glen and give him the bad news. Her mother was in the hospital, and there was no one to take care of her son, Jimmy. She had to leave the tour.
âBullshit!â he shouted at her, and knew immediately why she was doing it. She was following Irisâs example and thought she could walk out on her contract because Iris had, but it had nothing to do with it. âIâll have you put in jail if you leave,â he threatened her.
âThereâs nothing I can do,â Pattie said. âMy momâs in the hospital. She canât take care of my son. Heâs at a neighborâs and I canât leave him there. You donât pay me enough to hire childcare for him,â she said bluntly. âIâll come back when Momâs better, but Iâve got to leave today. I donât want my son to wind up in foster care.â
âI wonât pay you a penny while youâre gone,â he warned her. She knew he wouldnât, and she knew she would have to waitress or work at the 7-Eleven, whatever she had to do for now. Jimmy was the priority for her, not the tour. She was lucky her mom had taken care of him for eleven years. Now it was Pattieâs turn to be a mom.
âI just wanted to let you know. Iâm not running out on you. Iâm giving you notice that I have to go home for a family emergency.â She was doing everything by the book, and Glen didnât care. He hung up on her without another word. She took the bus to Biloxi, Mississippi, that night. She sent Iris a text to let her know she had left the tour, and Iris texted back that she hoped her mom would be okay soon.
As soon as Boyâs single was released, the publicity office of Maddox Productions booked him onto various radio shows and a couple of TV shows to publicize it. On two of the TV shows, he was booked to perform his single, which was flying up the charts and rapidly becoming a hit. Boy asked the publicity office if they would book Iris on the show with him, so they could do a duet. Iris thought it sounded like fun. The show accepted, and Boy and Iris had been rehearsing one of her songs. It was the one they both liked best, and gave Iris a chance to show her stuff too. Clay thought it was a good idea, and would give the public a glimpse of her, as a teaser for her own album that would be released soon.
They were booked onto a late-night talk show, the most popular one, and their performance was thrilling. Boyâs first single was a big hit that week and way up on the charts. They were two beautiful young people performing and the studio audience went crazy. So did the ratings. Their first TV appearance was a huge success. Someone from Glen Hendrixâs office called him when they saw it.
