Chapter 37
Eriis
ONCE HE HAD faded from view and she was certain he could remain unseen, she opened the door. She felt his kiss, and a fierce whisper against her ear, âI am yours. Iâll love you until the moons fall into the sand.â
She threw her arms out, but there was nothing there. One of the white clad guards glanced over his shoulder at her through the open door, and she nodded at him and pulled it shut.
She wiped her face again and took a deep breath. The first part of it was done, and she couldnât do anything but hope he had enough strength left to go unseen until he was past the Royal Arch and into the market. The next part was up to her, and she wasnât looking forward to it.
âJust like we practiced it,â she told herself. âPretend youâre in Ilaanâs room and weâll have a big drink when weâre done. You just have to live long enough to tell him you love him, too. Itâll be fine. Itâll be fine.â
Sheâd never been so afraid and so full of joy at the same time; deep calming breaths did nothing to slow her heart. âSo letâs get this over with.â
She took a scrap of paper out of her pocket and unfolded it; it was covered with Eriisai script, but spelled out so she could read it. She didnât need to understand the words. She held the paper up with her right hand, and with her left, firmly gripped the ornate silver doorknob. She began to read aloud.
She concentrated so hard on sounding out all the words properly, she at first didnât notice smoke rising from her fingers. She paused to take a breath and swallow, and saw that her hand was on fire. She pulled the sleeve of her tunic away and kept reading. The page burned above her fingers, thereâd be no using it again. As she got toward the bottom of the page, she started to feel pain, something she hadnât experienced in any capacity since Scilla had changed her into her current form. Whatever she was doing to the door, it was fighting back. At first the sensation, pain, was interesting, and she pushed it aside. She kept reading even when the skin on the back of her hand turned black, cracked and flaked off, when her hand fused with the silver of the handle, even when she had to gasp out the words so she wouldnât scream and bolts of agony shot up her arm, making her good hand shake violently. Finally she got to the bottom of the page and said the final words; the paper turned to ash and crumbled. She pulled her charred hand off the doorknob, noticing with sick fascination that the pinkie finger of her left hand stuck to the door and broke off.
She stumbled to the bed and sat, holding her hand up, the pain receding and the skin already sloughing off its dead black surface, revealing new, golden pink skin underneath.
