“You actually thought that would work?” A chorus of laughter from the other recruits followed Ava as she stumbled out of the lab and into the cramped corridor. Tears welled in her eyes.

She’d been working on a version of her Grappling Rod that would work in low or no gravity. The class project had somehow ended up at the Institute, and she’d been offered a chance to work and make an impression, potentially leading to a job or internship down the road.

But once on the station, things had taken a turn. After the first night partying, Ava had been turning down guys left and right. She didn’t know exactly what Jack and her were, status wise, but she didn’t plan on seeing anyone else until she figured it out. She had started to suspect she didn’t want to see anyone else ever again. She knew he was the only one for her.

But it didn’t stop the other guests. The last guy to make a move on her was one of the other recruits.

She didn’t even know his name, she just called him Smarm. Well, Smarm had cornered her, trying to get her drunk. When she said she had a boyfriend, Smarm grinned.

“What happens in space stays in space, baby,” he said. “Anyway, girl like you off planet, I’m sure he’s fucked all your friends by now.”

Ava wasn’t sure why, but when Smarm said that, she’d felt excited, not jealous. Need to explore that later, she thought. Surprising. But maybe it's a good surprise?

But then Smarm had gotten handsy, and Ava twisted his arm in a move she learned in self defense class. She heard a pop, and found she’d apparently dislocated his finger.

Running from the room, Ava stepped into her tiny quarters and tried to go to sleep. Unfortunately Smarm had not, and instead spread rumors about how crazy she was, and quickly she became the target of all of the other recruits.

This time something had sparked and exploded when she tried her Grappling Rod. It was purely mechanical, with only a small watch battery, so Ava knew it had been tampered with. Nothing in it would have sparked at all. She suspected Smarm and his gang, but at this point she had no allies. Even the supervisors seemed reluctant to get involved with the students' drama.

She got back to her room, closed the door, and sat on her bed and cried. After five minutes, the mechanical engineer wiped her eyes, sat up, and opened her trunk. Three other Grappling Rods lined the bottom. Ava always had backups. And she wasn’t passing up this opportunity.

Her phone beeped, and she checked it, desperately hoping for a text from Jack, but the phone just displayed a text alert: “No Signal, Please Return to Earth.”
