I’m not sure what scared me more: the Dark Elves waiting outside or that Emili seemed deathly sick. Since my arrival, she’d hacked up phlegm and coughed. Now, her eyes seemed to glaze over from fever.

“How long has she been this way?” I asked Chi.

Chi remained quiet most of the time. I could feel anger radiating off her. She was more than just distracted. Alas, it wasn’t only about Graham and my loss of tact.

“What’s going on?” I asked. “You’re not acting like your usual self.”

“A lot can change in five years.”

Although for me it seemed to be only a handful of nights, for them it had been way more than fifteen-hundred days. When I truly scrutinized the group, I noticed the subtle differences.

Right now, it was more about the contents of the cupboards, and pure survival.

“Do you want me to make a run?” I suggested.

Chi, Kristen, Ola and Emili all turned their attention towards me. “But you just got here,” Chi finally said. “After all this time, you finally showed up.”

I could hear the accusation in her tone. “Are you accusing me of something?”

“I can’t accuse you of what I don’t know,” Chi began. “but I can say that something feels strange, even off. You prance up in here like nothing has changed, wearing clothes that show neither wear nor tear, and you bring news of death. I can’t help but wonder if you’ve been treated well, too well by these marauders.”

“Then just ask me the question,” I demanded. “If you want to know where I’ve been, then you need to ask me.”

I straightened my back and planted my feet.

“Whoa,” said Kristen. “There’s enough of a battle going on outside these doors. We don’t need one here.”

“Are you not going to answer the question?” Chi asked.

“I didn’t hear one formulated, but since curiosity begs to wonder where I’ve been, I’ll happily tell you. I’ve been living in shanty town, surviving.”

I wished things could be different.

Although they tried to reassure me that things were the same, the way life had changed highlighted the truth, my truth of the matter.

The wind began to howl outside.

In this world, filled with perseverance, maybe I was still quite apathetic. I’d been forced into these gigantic, god/savior, shoes, and no one wanted my opinion. This conversation pushed me deeper into uncharted territory, dark waters in which I could only drown.

I wasn’t going to tell them about Loki. It’s not like they’d believe me anyway. He was to be my one secret. What good could it bring to mention him? To them, the supernatural was just a myth; mythology like Hercules or Zeus. For them to learn that those stories about the pantheons were true, and worse, that this was truly the beginning of war? I couldn’t bring myself to utter those words.

Instead, I nodded toward Ola, and hoped she understood. I’d never been a liar, but I’d also never had to fight to save the people I loved.

Emili needed some medicine. Our arguing wasn’t going to change a damn thing.
