When Notarbartolo was in the vault, at least two levels below the street, he had a decision to make. He and his crew could not carry everything that was in the vault. They had to leave some of it behind. Otherwise the loot would have slowed them down, and they would have risked getting caught. When we insist on carrying the deadweight of our sins, not only are we forced to slow down but we also forfeit our destiny.

We were never supposed to try to carry the weight of our sin. We are only supposed to carry the weight of our purpose. In Psalm 139 King David prays a heartfelt prayer that tells us how long God’s eye has been on us. While we were in our mother’s wombs, before we saw the light of day, before we decided to sin, before any one of us found ourselves in the pigpen contemplating eating leftover scraps, God knew us and had a master plan in place so we wouldn’t have to waste our time digging for scraps.

We were never supposed to carry our sin, because that was Jesus’s purpose. He was predestined to bear the full weight of our sin. When we don’t let the burden of sin go, when we refuse to receive His forgiveness, we are essentially saying what Jesus did on the cross was not enough.

Luke 9:23 says that if we want to be His disciples, we have to take up our crosses and follow Him. Jesus was not inviting us to carry the cross He carried. We are not sharing in this part of His plan. This isn’t an invitation to follow Him to Calvary. Each one of us has a cross we must bear: not the cross of sin but the cross of purpose.

We were never promised an easy road to purpose. Sometimes that road is long and difficult. We will be confronted with the truth of our limitations and our failures. We will be distracted by the everyday challenges of life. We may even be frustrated by the sacrifices we will have to make, but ultimately those challenges and sacrifices will bring us right where we are supposed to be as we continually receive God’s grace. We need God’s grace to carry out our calling. We need God’s grace to be the people God planned for us to be. We need God’s grace to do the things He planned for us long before we were even born.

Unlike Jesus, we do not have to be perfect to carry out our purpose. We will make mistakes. We will fall short. We will have moments of discouragement, and we may even make the kinds of decisions that the prodigal son made and find ourselves alone, broke, and digging through trash for something to eat. This doesn’t surprise God. It doesn’t scare Him away or make Him change His mind about the prodigal son—or us.

I recently watched a video on a social-media platform in which a mother was chasing her third-grade son around a dining room table.
