SOLOMON HAD FELT stupid at first. He cringed recalling how he sounded when he asked her to hold her hand, but it had been worth it. It didn’t matter that his palms had turned sweaty and cramped up after two hours. Shelby had read one hundred pages and he barely remembered any of it. All he could think of was that he liked this girl. Like, liked this girl. This project of handholding had decided it for him; he was in. And even if he didn’t know what to do, his body was letting him know. It almost unmanned him a few times, the feelings that were stirring. He didn’t know how Peter stayed so calm and collected. Being attracted to someone was sticky business.

No one ever told him it would be electric and all consuming, or that it would inhabit every part of his mind. His thoughts would randomly dwell on her at odd times and he found himself smiling a dopey grin, much to his shame. The vigor of being infatuated was also new. He hardly knew what to do with the energy he experienced from this rush. He had no idea how his parents ever got anything done if they felt a fraction of what he was feeling. Holding her hand had been a singular experience. It tilted things, awakened places in him that he’d never explored before. Such a simple gesture had him befuddled. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like when he finally kissed her. He was pretty sure he’d catch fire.

So he trained harder to exhaust his body. Listened to audiotapes on science, sociology, psychology, and mundane things like algebra and calculus. He trumped Peter on sword drills and flounced Gideon in fencing. Those events weren’t unusual, but the fervor he carried it out with amazed even him. And the duke, yes, his father treated him differently. He was speaking to him as if he were a mere son and not an equal lord. He had actually given him a set down for being late to a jousting session, in front of Dover’s army. It should have been humiliating, but it wasn’t.

It was refreshing. He felt young. Free.

“Why are you smiling?” Gideon muttered as he spurred his horse. He passed up Solomon’s steed.

That was one way to wipe a smile off his face. They were on the path to a village near Hastings where it was reported a family had been killed. One member remained and they were going to question him. There was heavy suspicion that certain documents had been involved. It was not the time to be joyful. The capture of the bandits was nigh. Jeremy came along on the run to put an end to things. Dover was cheating, but Jareth was beyond caring. Too many people were dying, and now the Mongolian League was involved.

His siblings were quiet, their heads bowed as they followed. He would have thought that Benjamin was crying had he not known he had a cold.
