Cantor’s Jewish origin has been questioned by some, but A. Fraenkel, who may be regarded as a disciple of the great mathematician, tells us in his well documented monograph that Cantor’s father was a Jew.

F. Cajori: A History of Mathematics, page 327. Cajori is, of course, not Jewish, and probably did not know that most of those mentioned in the passage were Jews.

Sylvester is here referring to the Jew, Jacobi.

A. Fraenkel: Georg Cantor, page 25.

S. Brodetsky, in The Real Jew (edited by H. Newman) page 167.

Heinrich Hertz’s mother was supposed to have been a non-Jewess. Under ordinary circumstances, the son of a non-Jewish mother would, according to my own cross-inheritance theory, be regarded as a Gentile. But whether Hertz belongs to the exceptions who take after their father is something which should be examined genetically (family records). Roth makes Gustav Hertz, the Nobel Prize winner in physics, out to be a cousin of Heinrich on the father’s side, but actually he was his nephew, so that Gustav Hertz was only a quarter-Jew, which fact constitutes no good reason for the inclusion of his more famous uncle in our survey. But this omission might be considered a gap by some of the Judaeologists.

It is a pity that the solid essay (“Jewish Thought in the Modern World”) by Leon Roth in The Legacy of Israel (1927), planned by the late Israel Abrahams and edited by E. R. Bevan and Charles Singer, both of whom are reputed scholars, should have been marred by such an error as thrusting upon Professor Weyl a Jewish ancestry. Once more we must realize that we cannot be too careful in investigating a man’s racial origin.

A. Moszkowski: Einstein The Searcher, page 225. (English translation)

His investigation into the principle of gravitation has been mentioned in the chapter on Astronomy.

When Rutherford was asked at the time of the First World War why he did not abandon the tiny atom and turn to something more impressive, his reply was that the outcome of the work on this bagatelle would prove more important than the War itself. His prediction came true, though he did not live to see it verified.
