CHAPTER FOURTEEN
JULIAN HADN'T PAID too much attention to Brandon's appearances in exhibitions. If he had, he would have recognized him already. Although he'd changed a good deal since his high school basketball days, he still resembled the boy in Tyler's photos.
He was very tall - not quite as tall as Tyler but still just under six and a half feet tall. He'd gained a good deal of weight, including a broad stomach that pressed against his pilot's suit. His face had widened a good deal too, filling out his cheeks, but it'd only made him look even more charmingly handsome. His grin went from ear to ear. Even after moving from basketball to video games, his strength was still apparent.
In the pictures, Brandon had been lean and muscular. Now, he looked like an incredibly tough bouncer who could stop trouble at a bar with a single word.
The Mech he'd brought today had only a passing resemblance to the one he'd used at the World Championships.
Unlike his previous close-combat Mech, this one was outfitted for long-range artillery support. It maintained the same bombardment arm and supportive back cannons, but it held a bazooka in the right hand rather than a shield, and a strange UFO-like disk had replaced its legs.
The hover plate was a unique item designed to improve firing accuracy. Under usual circumstances, it would be extremely irresponsible to use an explosive weapon like a bazooka for long-range support. You had about an equal chance of hitting your teammates as you did hitting the enemy.
The hover plate allowed your Mech to aim as if it were standing still even as you were moving. Despite that benefit, it was one of the cheapest items in the shop - only 1,000 Credits - because you had to forfeit your legs to equip it.
The general consensus was that it wasn't worth using a hover plate on stages with gravity. Because you couldn't stand or walk, your Mech would almost certainly run out of power before the end of the battle.
The hover plate was more useful in space, but even space stages had obstacles like asteroids, moons, or space stations. On top of that, the Mech was poorly balanced and top-heavy.
But in addition to equipping the hover plate, Brandon had also swapped his frame, trading in the Defender Mk. III for the state-of-the-art Guardian X. The hover plate looked extremely strange on the spherical Mech. It trailed down like it was a skirt.
The frame was a better fit for Brandon's current role. The Defender had initially been built as a frontline skirmisher. Another critical advantage of Grunt frames was that you could carry an infinite number of them. Naturally, the Master of Minions knew to switch up his weapons and frame for each perfect situation. That kind of strategy required overwhelming game knowledge.
It was another thing Julian needed to consider.
"What are you doing here? I'm glad I got to see you!"
"Yeah, sorry for putting it off. I don't have a lot of time. I was just here to drop by and congratulate the Captain.
