Caught in the Act

As Prodigy headed back over to Poppa Doc’s house for the informal roundtable discussion, his cell phone started screaming. He hit the send button.

“Hello.”

“Hey, my man! Where’ve you been?”

“What’s up, Unc?” Prodigy said to his Uncle Ray.

“How ya handling ya new roomy over there?”

“I’m about to put him out.”

“Already? What did he do?”

“Just being Jermaine, you know. I guess it’s just a compatibility thing. Two grown men aren’t meant to cohabit for too long. Plus, I’ve outgrown a lot of the things that he seems to be crazy about.”

“Well, you gotta remember that you’re a year or two older than him, so be patient.”

“It’s not just that. He’s disrespectful. He drinks all day and all night, and if he’s not drunk then he’s high. Earlier today I almost lost it. I brought some company over and he was passed out on the floor, inebriated. Then he left some hot grease on the stove and almost burned my house up, not to mention his dumb ass. I wanted to kill him,” Prodigy rattled off.

“That’s different, he has to respect you in yo’ house now. You want me to come and get him?” Uncle Ray asked.

“Nah, that’s part of his problem, we’ve always made allowances for him. I already told him that he has one month to get it together, because he needs his own place.”

“Well, good. It seems like you handling things over there. What about a job? Has he found a job yet?”

“Hell no! And that’s another thing. One of my dogs is a manager at Best Buy, so I asked him if he could hook Jermaine up with a job. He told me no problem, all Jermaine had to do was come in and fill out the job application. You know, that clown never showed up. When I asked him what happened, he said he went to the wrong store and waited for two hours. And I’m supposed to believe that,” Prodigy said, clearly frustrated with his sorry cousin.

“Give him time. I just called to check up on you. Let’s get together one day next week. I got some things that I wanna get your opinion on,” Uncle Ray said.

“Just give me a call, but make it after eight o’clock in the evening, anything before that is bad for me,” Prodigy said, feeling proud that his uncle respected him enough to ask his opinion on something.

“Jermaine told me that you were volunteering up at some youth center. Go ahead, boy, and do ya thing. I like that.”

“Yeah, it’s kind of cool,” Prodigy said modestly.

“I’m not gonna hold ya. We’ll talk.”

“A’ight, Unc.”

Prodigy’s uncle’s call got him to thinking about Jermaine. He was truly getting tired of his little cousin. He didn’t want to put him out in the streets, but something had to give. All Jermaine seemed to want to do was get high and talk about all of the women he was sleeping with. Prodigy could literally feel his own transition into becoming a real man, because in a matter of weeks he went from seeking out the latest concubine to sleeping alone.
