Doug sprang up like a jack-in-the-box to stare at me.

“What are you saying?” he asked.

“What d’you think?” I got my underwear from the drawer and moved to the closet to pull a dress over my head. Then I stood before the mirror combing my hair and watching him.

Doug sat bare-chested to one side of the four-poster bed. He propped both elbows on his knees and his hands supported his head.

A half smile curved my mouth and I put down the comb and sat next to him.

“D, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I were pregnant.”

“Yes, it would,” he grumbled.

“That’s so melodramatic.” I rubbed his back. “Come on, I don’t know for a fact that I am.”

He sat up, looking at me. “Which brings me to the question of how you can possibly be pregnant and you’re on the pill.”

I ran my teeth over my lip and when our gazes met, he let out his breath.

Understanding dawned in his eyes. “That’s not how we’ve done things in our time together.”

“I know, but we have to be off the contraceptive for a while before anything happens.”

Hand to the back of his head, he said, “You should have told me.”

“You’re right.”

“How long have you been off it?” Doug’s words were low yet intense.

“A month and a half,” I mumbled.

“Kally.” He groaned as if he was in pain. “How could you do this?”

I squeezed his arm. “I know this is bad, but I want this baby so much. I should have told you, and I’m sorry I didn’t.”

“This tells me you don’t trust me to keep my word.”

“Don’t get me started on that.” I rolled my eyes and removed my hand from his thigh. “From where I sit, you had no intention of us moving beyond the ‘let’s give ourselves more time’ stage.”

Doug sat up and turned stormy eyes on me. “That didn’t give you the right to come off those pills.”

I folded my arms across my chest. “I have a right to do exactly what I please with my body.”

A tic pulsed around Doug’s eye and he snapped. “Yes, you do, but you should have shared this with me since I’m half of this equation.”

Looking sideways at him, I said, “I already said I was wrong not to tell you.”

“Your attitude says something else.”

“Doug, don’t blow this out of proportion.”

Eyes narrowed, he turned to face me. “You obviously don’t understand the implications of what you’ve done. You’ve betrayed my trust and that’s not something I take lightly.”

“Don’t shout at me.” I ran a hand through my hair, messing it up again. “I already said—”

“Yeah, you already said you were sorry, right?” His lips quirked, but Doug was far from amused.

“Let’s not argue about this anymore.”

“You can’t just shut this down as if the problem is solved.”

His insistence lit the fuse to my anger. “As far as I know, we don’t have one, other than the fact that you keep pushing my needs aside.”

“You’re not serious.” Doug stared at me, frowning. “Actually, I think you’re being unfair.
