“So tell me about this mystery man. Finn, is it? You’ve hardly said anything, and hasn’t it been, like, months or something?”

Fiona’s friend, Sian, had a slightly sceptical look on her face, and this was what Fi had dreaded, although she had prepared an answer which she hoped would put an end to any further enquiries.

“I’ve hardly seen you,” she said, turning it back on her friend, “and it’s Quinn. He’s very intellectual, into the issues of the day, you know, interesting!” Fi took a sip of her red wine. They were in a bar in town. It was early evening, but the beginnings of the weekend crowd were filtering through; girls with very little on, men sporting checked shirts. They were like a tribe, Fi thought. A townie tribe. Sticking close together so they could take on anyone who wanted to threaten their enjoyment of their night out.

“Ooh!” Sian’s interest was piqued. Fi wasn’t sure if this meant her plan had backfired. “What kind of issues?”

Fi put her glass down. “Well, um, the environment, partly. And the plight of humanity, I suppose. How technology is taking over our lives and we’re becoming less and less, well, human.”

“I see,” her friend replied, looking thoughtful. “Sounds like he’s converted you already!”

“Not converted. I did think about these things already,” Fiona said, defensively. “But he puts them so well. We have some really interesting discussions.”

Sian began to smile and she leant forward, giving her friend a wink. “And…?”

“And what?” replied Fiona, knowing exactly what.

“Is he… sexy? Have you slept with him?”

Fi laughed, in spite of herself. “What do you think?” They both giggled. “He’s… well, more than sexy. He’s…”

“Hot!” Sian said, and raised her glass.

“Hot is an understatement, but yeah, for now, that’ll do.”

The girls clinked glasses and the conversation turned to Sian’s job and what an idiot her boss was. Fi was relieved. She didn’t want to say that things hadn’t exactly been going how she’d wanted them to with Quinn. It wasn’t that he didn’t make her insides turn over when he looked at her, but maybe it was best that her friends didn’t know too much about Quinn. Every time she saw him now she felt like maybe there was something not quite right. At first his mystique had attracted her and she had felt at the beginning of an adventure; like this person could open her life up to new possibilities. It was dangerous and thrilling. However, it had been months since they had first met and, much as she didn’t want to lapse into so-called ‘normal’ behaviour, she knew she was doing, and Quinn berated her for it. The fact was they had only actually met up with one another on twelve or thirteen occasions, at the most. She just didn’t understand why he couldn’t send her a quick text if he wasn’t going to come round, or if he couldn’t make one of their dates. It was just common courtesy, surely, she told herself, aware that if she pushed him too far, she could be unfairly deemed a ‘bunny boiler’.
