I was bundled to the teeth, but the frigid morning air still crept into my coat. I stamped my feet, glad I’d left Bernie at home. We were in the middle of the woods, looking down over the precipice where Zane’s drone had spotted something, waiting for Dave’s recon team to come back up the hill.

The sheriff turned towards me and motioned for me to follow him to his pickup.

“You look miserable, Brynn. Do you want to sit inside with the heater on until we hear something?”

I shook my head and shoved my hands deep into the pockets of my coat.

“No. If she shows up, I don’t want to miss her. I have a feeling it won’t be long now. Besides, with the sun out, it should warm up a little, right?”

Dave snorted before rummaging inside the cab and pulling out a giant thermos that had to be nearly as old as I was.

“My dad had that exact one when I was a kid,” I said.

“Hey, if it still works, there’s no reason to stop using it. Did you bring a travel mug with you?”

I nodded and hustled over to Zane’s Jeep to grab our travel mugs. Dave topped both of them off before taking a call. I rejoined Zane on the top of the bluff, pushing his cup into his hand. He twisted off the lid, and steam flowed out, nearly obscuring his face.

“Where on earth did you find this?”

“Dave had a huge thermos. I should ask my dad when he’s here if he still has his. That thing was always a workhorse.”

I took a sip from my mug and winced as I burned my lip. Yep, I never learn. Still, it felt good to have warmth coursing through my stomach. I shuffled closer to the edge and peered down.

“How long do you think it’s going to take until we hear something? They’ve been down there for over half an hour.”

“It’s rough terrain, so it’s hard to say,” Zane said, touching my arm. “Careful. It’s slick out. The last thing we need is you slipping down there.”

I backed up a little and took another sip of my coffee before scanning the area where we were standing. Marilyn’s rental house was just barely visible. Had she really been back here the whole time and no one ever noticed? Unfortunately, it was entirely possible, given how remote the area was.

“Something makes little sense to me,” I said, realizing something as I looked around. “Why did Marilyn rent this place? It doesn’t seem like a property she’d like. I picture her as more of the penthouse luxury type.”

“It was cheap. What’s going on? Why am I here?”

I spun around, surprised. In the thin morning light, I could just make out the outline of Marilyn’s ghost standing next to me. Zane was still staring down the hill, unaware we’d been joined by a spirit. I edged closer to her, hoping she wouldn’t disappear. I needed to tread carefully.

“We think we found a body down there.
