THE CELLAR
1993
Rosie was almost out the door â Miranda already in the car with her backpack and coat. She did not recognize the number, it was local, she picked up. For a fraction of a second, she imagined that it was State Farm telling her sheâd missed a payment on the car insurance.
âRosie.â
Not a question.
If an elevator suddenly lost its traction and plummeted, the occupants must feel exactly like this. The squealing gravity, the falling almost too fast for fear.
âItâs me.â
No point in pretending, no point in asking Who?
âIâm at the Gulf station in town.â
She coiled the phone cord around her fingers, said the only thing she could think of: âWhy?â
He made a soft laugh, weary perhaps. âYou ask why, my girl?â
Rosie peered out the door. Miranda was looking back at her, pointing to a make-believe watch on her wrist and mouthing, âWeâre late!â
âCome and pick me up,â Bennett said.
âRight now?â
âYes, right now.â
Rosie said, âI need to be at work.â There was a pause. She heard him huff, as if of displeasure. âTell them something came up.â
âItâs not that kind of job.â
âTell them.â
âYes, Bennett.â How odd his name on her tongue, the syllables dead-ending with the hard ât.â
âWhereâs Miranda?â
âOn a field trip.â
âFor how long?â
The lie was smooth. âThree days. A nature center. In upstate New York.â
âI have ached in my bones for you.â
Rosie wound the phone cord tight around her wrist. âGive me an hour. Two hours.â
There was silence, as if he was considering what there may be to consider, the full array of options before him. âIf thatâs the best you can do.â
Rosie thought of calling Billy. Perhaps she could take Miranda away for a few days. But she didnât want to put Billy in the middle.
At school, she parked rather than simply dropping Miranda at the front door. They walked together, Mirandaâs warm hand in hers. Soon Miranda would tear away from her, veer into her group of friends.
âBye, my love.â She kissed Mirandaâs forehead, and her daughter embraced her.
âLove you, Mummy!â Away she flew.
Inside the school office, Rosie found Karina, the school secretary. âI donât know if you can help. My grandmother died and I need to go to her funeral. Itâs not a family-friendly event and so Iâm hoping I can find someone for Miranda to stay with for a few days.â
âIâm sorry to hear that.â Karina frowned. âBut ââ
âI just donât know any of the other mothers,â Rosie rushed on. âIâm always working so I donât get to meet them. Or Iâd ask one of them.â
âI wish I could help ââ
A womanâs voice from the hallway, âMiranda can come with me.â
Rosie turned, and the woman continued, âI know Miranda, sheâs in Margoâs class. She can come home with me. She can stay the night. Two nights. Whatever you need.â
âAre you sure, Ginny?â Karina sounded relieved.
Ginny held out her hand to Rosie, âGinny Benoit.â
Rosie exhaled. âThank you.â
She arrived at the care home five minutes late. The job was minimum wage â bathing the elderly residents, changing
