Over the course of the week, Samuel met the rest of the residents, living and ghostly. Sarah visited him every day, so she knew all the living residents as well, though she’d missed out on the haunts so far. It was clear she wasn’t happy about Samuel’s moving in, though she got along with all of us, Hunkman especially.

But she wasn’t coming to flirt, sadly. She was coming to be with her grandfather.

Samuel had the best record for familial attendance of any new resident, ever, and that included the ones whose families didn’t really want said resident to move into Happy Acres. Sarah gave the impression of being willing to come by every day for the rest of Samuel’s life. While this was lovely and to be wished for every senior in any home anywhere, it was taking love and loyalty to an extreme that seemed just a tad unnatural.

Sarah herself was a lovely girl, smart, pretty, and, when not discussing wedding plans or her intended, vivacious. She possessed an actual sense of humor as well as kindness and compassion, though she hid the humorous side a lot. She’d been career-oriented before her great loss, but now just seemed focused on going through the motions in regard to everything other than Samuel.

Joseph and I both spent some effort to get the full Norman story out of her. We were rewarded with the firm conviction that Sarah was making a horrible life decision based out of grief and fear. Norman would probably make some woman a good husband, but Sarah wasn’t going to be that woman. He was jealous, but in a controlling way. In fact, the main word for Norman was “controlling”.

But Sarah wasn’t my only concern. I had a long-standing concern I kept an eye on. Hunkman was acting a little off, and I was pretty sure it was because of Sarah.

“So,” I said as he came to gather us for dinner the anniversary of Samuel’s first week with us. “You going to make a move?”

“On who?” Hunkman asked mildly.

“On Sarah. She’s interested, trust me as a woman, and she needs someone to get her away from her odious fiancé.”

Hunkman’s eyes shown for a moment. But then the light died and he shook his head. “I’m taken. You know that.”

I did. I was about the most open person you could ask for, but I drew the line at someone having a true romantic relationship with a ghost, despite the fact that The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was a Home favorite. I drew a harsher line when said ghost resided Downstairs. And that only for roughly three days a month. Three special days.

Hunkman had fallen in love with the wrong girl from the wrong time. But until Sarah had shown up, I hadn’t found a viable alternative. Now, it might be possible to get a double and save two people from their own bad romantic choices.

Clearly it was time to plot. Which was fine with me, because I was a world-class plotter.
