OUTSIDE THE HOUSE, confusion clouded Miller’s face. “Do you think Mrs. Pierce knows more, sir?”

“I do.”

“Why are we leaving now? Should we not press her for answers?”

The weight of Ellis’s rock bounced against Winston’s leg, keeping time with their pace as they walked from the house. “It’s better she doesn’t know what we think. And I’m not sure she has fully come to terms with her husband’s death. Her behaviour was certainly out of the ordinary for a grieving widow, even for someone who may have been unconventional in her approach to life. We will let her prepare for her husband’s funeral while we continue to speak to others who might have had a stake in Pierce’s death.”

Winston paused his stride and turned to Miller. “Thomas, visit Sharp’s Fine Goods and Tailoring to see if he provided Pierce with the gloves. His record-keeping is no doubt better than Pierce’s, and he’ll know exactly how many pairs were ordered.”

“And the butler, sir?”

“He doesn’t have an alibi, but my impression is he genuinely cared for Pierce. Still, we will have to consider him a suspect until we know otherwise.” Winston began walking again. “Let’s go first to Reginald Sawyer.”

Miller held up his hand and stopped. “Sir, I’m still confounded. What do you take from the widow’s behaviour?”

Winston paused. “You’re right to return to this. She may very well be trying to hide something. We will need something more to figure out what.”
