I had to get my mind off my sexy neighbor, so I headed out to the bar in town, hoping to drink him off my mind. But as I sat at the counter, all I kept thinking about was Lucas and the touch of his hands on me. This was getting bad, to the point that even the men I would normally give a second glance to did absolutely nothing for me. I even considered asking the bartender when he got off, but even his handsome looks didn’t do it for me anymore.

Sighing, I decided to call it quits and head home. It was early for me to be home on a Saturday night, but sitting at the bar wasn’t any better. At least at home I could get into my pajamas and watch a movie for entertainment.

I slammed my car door and headed for the front door, but the shrill sound of screaming broke the silence of the night. I stopped and waited for a moment, thinking it would go away, but when it didn’t, I made the split second decision to go check on Lucas and Emily. It was probably nothing, but her cries could be heard loud and clear.

Knocking on the door, I waited for several minutes until the door finally swung open and Lucas answered, looking disheveled and smelled like vomit. I grimaced, shaking my head at the situation in front of me.

“What’s going on?”

“I have no idea,” he said, bouncing her on his hip. “She has a fever and she’s been puking for the last few hours. It’s probably because you let her drink out of the hose,” he said accusingly.

I rolled my eyes at him and walked inside, setting down my purse. “It’s not because she drank out of the hose, or I would be sick too. Give her to me,” I said, motioning for him to hand her over.

He held her protectively against him, still bouncing her. “No, she needs me.”

“She needs to stop being bounced around like a ping pong ball while her stomach is upset. All that jiggling is just going to make her throw up again.”

He frowned, instantly stopping. “Really?”

I shot him an irritated look. “If your stomach was upset, would you go on a rollercoaster?”

“I guess not.”

“Give her to me. You need a shower.”

“Why?”

“Because you smell like vomit, and the smell of vomit will just make her puke some more. Did you just let her throw up all over you?”

“Well…yeah. I didn’t know what else to do.”

I took a deep breath and pried the little girl from his grip. “Go clean up before there are two people throwing up in here.”

I pulled her into my arms and walked away, not bothering to pay any further attention to him. I may not be motherly material, but I had nieces and nephews, and enough practice between all of them to handle a situation like this.

“Let’s get you cleaned up,” I said, smiling at her as I walked into her bedroom. Her room looked as trashed as mine.
