Safety Mechanisms

This is a good place to bring up the subject of safeties. Safeties are mechanisms built into the firearm that keep it from firing accidentally. There are a lot of variations and naturally some are better or worse depending upon the firearm's intended use.

Safeties function by blocking the trigger from being pulled, the sear from releasing, the hammer from contacting the firing pin (if it is released), or mechanically block the hammer or firing pin from being released. Most modern firearms have a combination of these.
