CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
JAKE READ THE non-disclosure agreement deliberately. It raised many red flags that should concern anyone, but Jake suspected the people who signed it were desperate enough to believe anything. It prevented the person signing from divulging the meeting location, anything that transpired at the meetings, or anything pertaining to some guy named Julian. Severe consequences awaited anyone who did so.
There would be no need for anyone to reveal anything about the organization if it turned out to be legit. The document would be worthless as a Canadian penny if the organization proved illegal. Jake found a pen underneath the edge of a plate among the dishes on the kitchen table, shrugged, and signed.
He called Weatherby on his private number. When the doctor answered, Jake tried to sound enthusiastic.
âI wanted you to know I signed the document. This could be what I need. Itâs exciting that itâs such a closed group. The secrecy makes me curious. It must be something special.â
âJulian doesnât want everyone in there. Itâs for people who can relate to each otherâs problems. Heâs concerned that non-believers will dilute the message by spreading misinformation about its purpose. You know how people are. Iâm glad youâre planning to join us. Of course, if you find out it isnât for you, you can leave. Iâll pick you up at six tomorrow.â
Jake would have a day to wonder if he made the right decision. He could be totally wrong. As he stood under the showerhead the next morning, a little remorse settled over him for not telling Dani, Maria, or Avery where he planned to go. There would be time for that when he got back from the meeting. They would all try to talk him out of it if he told them, so he opted to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. He had to satisfy himself.
His phone rang as he emerged from the shower. He wrapped the large towel around his waist, tied an ugly knot at his hip, and checked the phoneâs display. Dani. He answered before it rang a third time.
âHi, Dani. How are you?â
âHi, handsome. Iâm doing great, thanks. I wanted to thank you for taking the girls to lunch. Emilie raved about it when I got home. She said you helped Haley, too.â
Jake examined his distorted image in the steam-coated mirror. He thought his chest and stomach were not horribly out of shape for an old guy. âThanks, but Iâm not sure I did that much. Haley is truly upset, as you can imagine. I donât know what we can do until your colleagues locate her mom. Howâs your investigation going?â
âIf you can fit me in, Iâll tell you over brunch. I need a break and would love to see you.â
âOf course, I have time, and I would love that. What time and where?â
As Dani would have to drive from the police station, they agreed to meet at Brew and Buns and chose 11:30. Jake couldnât be happier, but he pondered how to keep his plans to attend the Guardians of Truth meeting from the astute detective.
