Common Hurdle: “But What If I Don’t Have the Money?”

Unfortunately, mental health is one of the least reimbursed forms of health care, especially one-on-one counseling sessions.

Here are a few ways to be resourceful:

•Check to see if it’s possible for you to be fully or partially reimbursed by your health care plan.

•Check to see if your teen’s school has resources.

•Call local nonprofits and organizations to see if they have funds or counselors who will do pro bono work or sliding-scale (pay-what-you-can) sessions. Assume it will take twenty noes to get one yes.

•Think of counseling as an investment. If you can manage to scrape together the funds, it’s far better to do preventive care than some of the more drastic measures that I’ve seen parents have to take at the other end of the spectrum.

•Get wildly proactive and assemble a collection of caring adults. Contact the school counselor, bring your teen’s pediatrician into the fold, call on a stable of caring adults (your teen’s favorite uncle, the youth pastor, the local librarian, whomever), and make it a “whole village” effort.
