Chapter 15: Cerberus

As they approached the swamp, Egor and Miko found themselves surrounded by lush plants. Along the way, they collected various Mandrake Roots, Wild Mushrooms, and Hollow-Flowered Creepers, remembering that the alchemist, Alaric, would buy all of these ingredients.

Egor couldn’t help but feel troubled by the realization of the depths of human greed. Here he was, about to wrap up a major quest for the sandbox, holding a pickaxe worth possibly millions, and yet he still found himself collecting and hoarding all kinds of herbs that would only net him chump change. Well, not actual pennies, but copper coins, and it took a hundred of those just to make a single silver, not even a gold coin.

Miko, too, collected ingredients as they went, taking advantage of the fact that the plants hardly burdened their characters. Each Inventory slot could hold up to a hundred of a single item, making them feel like walking herbariums.

“Based on the map,” Egor said, “the quest point isn’t deep in the swamp, but not too close to shore either. I’ve got about twenty minutes left, so we should make it in time.”

No sooner had he finished speaking than an iron-clad, short, bearded man with axe handles sticking out from behind him tumbled out of the bushes. Beside him, a bear fitted in a leather breastplate and laden with luggage walked on its hind legs.

Rager, Level-15 Dwarf Paladin, Clan ‘Saints’

Shredder, Level-10 Mountain Bear, Rager’s pet

The dwarf’s nickname was as red as they come—a ganker, without a doubt. Egor tensed up but felt no fear, despite being nine levels lower. Instead, something stirred in his chest—his inner desire to hoard loot, rubbing his hands in anticipation. Egor felt that instinct rising to new heights within him, like a scavenger ready to pounce on any valuable item.

“Oh, wow!” the dwarf shouted, a crack in his voice hinting at the player’s age. “Shredder, look, fornicatin’ noobs are stomping through our forest again! I’m so tired of you lot, crawling out of every copulating hole! You engaged in active sexual intercourse with me, vagina on penis, you depraved woman!”

“I don’t get it…” Miko said, surprised.

Based on the dwarf’s crude manner of speaking and overall impudence, Egor suspected they were dealing with a fellow gamer from his home country, likely some teenager skipping school. The profanity, even though sanitized by the game’s auto-censor, made the player’s Russian origins apparent.

“What don’t you get, woman of low morals?” the dwarf interrupted. “Why’re you climbin’ into Rakuen with your crooked claws, you copulating crabs, huh? We keep teachin’ you clumsy dumbbell freaks a lesson, but you keep crawlin’ back!”

Egor objected, “But that’s the point of the game. If newcomers don’t appear, then—”

“I’ve got your point up my rear, got it?!”

“In what sense did you say that about my point being in your… behind?” Egor couldn’t resist the mockery, and Rager quickly caught on.

“Are you outta your mind?!” he yelled indignantly. “What’re you hintin’ at?! Shredder—attack!”

The bear, obeying its master’s command, charged at the two players.
