Chapter 28

‘I didn’t upset you, did I?’ Kitten asked with her usual sultry purr.

She slowly twirled the hairs on Charlie Ward’s chest with an elongated fake fingernail as they lay naked in the bed, both covered in a thin film of perspiration from their endeavours.

‘No, it’s not you I’m pissed off with.’

It was the scheming Shaun Doherty who would soon get his comeuppance, if Ward had anything to do with it.

‘I thought you’d want to know, that’s all.’

‘You’re right. I did want to know. You did good.’

‘Will he be in trouble with Henry now?’

Ward didn’t answer that one. In trouble with Henry? Why was it everyone assumed Henry Green called all the shots? For the most part they were equal partners in their business ventures, yet Ward felt like he was forever in his half-brother’s shadow.

Yes, Green was confident, headstrong, arrogant, and that had gotten him far in life – all in all he was a natural leader. But it wasn’t as though Ward was an idiot. He’d made plenty of money from ventures he’d taken the initiative on; he ran some of the most exclusive nightclubs in the city, and managed two dozen of the most expensive escorts around, Kitten being one of them. Henry had nothing to do with the prostitute business – he wasn’t interested, seeing it as low return for the amount of effort required. But then Henry was married, whereas Ward was a true bachelor.

Of all the escorts he managed, Kitten remained his firm favourite. In another life perhaps they would have been an item.

‘Baby?’ Kitten said.

Ward picked up her arm from his chest, shuffled out from underneath her and clambered to his feet at the side of the bed.

‘When will I see you again?’

He looked down at her. With her slim frame, balloon-like breasts and heavily tanned skin, she resembled a human Barbie doll. Ward loved it. So did a lot of other men, which was why she was so sought after. But Ward didn’t have to seek her out. He could have her whenever he wanted.

‘I’ll call you,’ he said as he stepped into his boxer shorts. ‘And if you hear anything else, you tell me straight away.’

‘Of course. Anything for you.’ She blew him a kiss.

Two minutes later Ward stepped out from Kitten’s apartment building into the heat of the day on West End Avenue, and traipsed east, heading for the subway on Broadway.

Kudos to Kitten. She really did have a way of making men spill their hearts out to her. With sex as good as it was with her, she’d learned to be a master manipulator of men – and women. She considered it a talent, and wasn’t averse to blackmailing the suckers if the information was juicy enough. Not this time though. She’d simply come straight out and told Ward what she’d heard of Doherty’s plans to scupper Green’s upcoming deal with the Colombians. She knew where her loyalties lay.

Ward needed to go and see Henry, tell him what he’d found out about that shitbag Shaun Doherty.
