Chapter 19

Seth

His fingers plucked each string with a practiced motion. Action without thought. A second nature developed from years of sitting with a guitar on his lap and wanting nothing more than to hear the music it played. Seth closed his eyes and let himself get carried off into another world. A world without limits and rules and disease. Pure and perfect in its own way. His band joined in, and together they did the one thing he’d spent his entire life working for: beautiful, soulful music.

“Stop! Stop! Stop!” Adam’s gruff voice boomed over the speakers. He sat protected in the sound room on the other side of the glass. “What is that? That’s not ‘Forgetting to Forget.’”

Seth slid the earphones from his head. “I’m not working on that song right now. Right now I’m working on ‘Waking Up with You.’”

“What? That didn’t even make the list. We agreed to hold that for now. It didn’t fit the rest of the set list, remember?”

Seth turned to Josh Strum, his bass player and long-time band mate. “We did talk about shelving this one,” Josh reminded him.

Blake and Aiden didn’t say a word. They were still sort of new to Seth and the studio. They’d been working on this album with Seth, but they hadn’t worked with him on the previous albums. They both shrugged as if they didn’t want to get involved in Adam and Seth’s discussion.

Josh walked over to Seth and whispered in his ear. “What’s going on, man?”

Seth looked down at his guitar. “It’s a better song. It may not be as commercial as ‘Forgetting to Forget,’ but it’s a stronger choice.”

Josh looked at Adam, who was now standing in the sound room. “Well?” he shouted. “Can we record some damn music or what?”

Seth slid the earphones back on and gripped his guitar. Then he started playing “Waking Up with You” again. He heard Josh pick up the bass, and then Blake and Aiden fell in right on cue.

“Stop!” Adam shouted. He threw down his clipboard and stormed into the studio. “What is your problem, man? We had a plan. You can’t go changing it just because you feel like it.”

“It’s my album,” Seth pointed at himself. “It’s my tour. It’s my career. And it’s my life.”

Josh put down his guitar and got in between Adam and Seth. “Hey, I think we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot. Let’s take a deep breath, relax, and figure this whole thing out.”

Josh was right. And Seth knew that changing the song would push Adam’s buttons. “Listen, Adam, I like ‘Forgetting to Forget.’ I mean, I wrote the thing. But my gut tells me that it’s not right. Not for this album. Not right now.”

Adam released a loud sigh, and if he were a dragon, Seth imagined it would’ve contained fire. “But we decided everything already. We put together the album list, and I feel that list is where it’s at. And the studio backs me up on it, too.”

Seth leaned over to set down his guitar and noticed his golden guitar pick necklace dangling in front of him.
