The Domino Deceit

I have always considered myself to be better with children than my famous colleague, but occasionally his powers of deduction can offer entertainment which goes down very well with a younger audience. One of the tricks I most enjoyed myself involved a set of dominoes which some children were amusing themselves with at the house of a client.

“Are you any good at dominoes, Mr. Holmes, sir?” asked one of the children as we passed through the drawing room.

“I have never had much use for the game itself,” he replied, “but I do know a couple of tricks associated with it.”

Naturally, the children pressed him to show them.

“Alright,” he said at last. “Your task is to join the dominoes – like number to like number – so that they form one long line. I will then be able to tell you, without looking at your line, the numbers at either end of it.”

He turned his back, and the children got to work joining the pieces.

“We’re ready, Mr. Holmes,” they proclaimed, mere moments later.

“Your numbers,” Holmes declared, “are four and six.”

The children erupted in squeals of amazement. But how did he know?
