Chapter 10

That evening, Liam and I went to grab dinner at Charm Café. After our eventful morning at Tom’s farm, I’d had a busy day at work and wanted nothing more than someone else to take care of my dinner.

Once we were seated, I glanced around the small café. This place managed to stay busy all year long. They served amazing food and had local specials all winter. The restaurant was housed in an old cape style home on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The downstairs had been renovated for seating, while the kitchen was upstairs with food sent down in a dumbwaiter. A bar ran along the back wall.

I leaned into my chair, glancing out into the darkness. The stars were bright, and the moon cast a shimmering ripple across the ocean’s dark surface. Looking back to Liam, I took a sip of my wine and eyed him. “I feel terrible about this morning,” I said.

Liam chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners with his smile. “Oh, why is that?”

“It was a little reckless for me to transport in there. Now that we know the whole story, I feel bad. That’s all. Tom’s a nice man.”

“So maybe now I won’t have to hold you back from willy-nilly transporting into wherever?” he countered with a gleam in his eyes.

I rolled my eyes. “I’ll consider it more carefully. Tom was a good sport about it.”

“That he was. Isobel didn’t have all the information. It’s amazing how a few gaps in the story can make it seem like something else altogether. What do you think Gabriel’s going to do?”

With a shrug, I replied, “I’m not sure. Like he said this morning, it would be a smart move. My guess is he’ll do it. He wants to expand the sugaring business, so it makes sense. It’s good money, and it will supplement his online work. He says he gets tired of being inside all the time. Plus, it sounds like it’ll save that part of the property from Hettie’s cousin.”

“That would be nice,” Liam replied. “I hate to see Tom in that situation.”

About to reply, I heard someone call my name and Liam’s. Glancing over, I saw Opal Good, Liam’s aunt, approaching our table. Opal was dressed in her typical outfit of slacks and practical leather walking boots with a blouse. In the winter, she added a black pea coat. Her silver hair was tied up in a knot, and her glasses hung on a chain around her neck.

“Hello, you two,” Opal said when she reached our table, her perceptive blue gaze bouncing between us.

“Hi, Aunt Opal,” Liam replied with a nod. “Are you here for dinner with Uncle Theo?”

“Of course. He just went to grab a table over there, but I wanted to say hello. And how are you, Moira?” she asked.

It had been a mere week since I’d seen Opal. She stopped by the store with regularity. “I’m doing fine. Thank you for helping the twins last week,” I added,
