Sardine workers’ houses or factory camps on the North Lubec Road, circa 1950s, owned by the Lawrence Brothers North Lubec Manufacturing & Canning Co. The view is north up the road, in the area of the Roger’s Island parking lot, with the home of Carrie Comstock Bangs, who wrote most of the text in this book, visible in the far background. Andrew Pierson, “Klondike” superintendant, owned and occupied the residence during the Jernegan era. Courtesy of Tom Dean.

“Jernegan, Phelan and Fisher were noticeably upon excellent terms and frequently in each others’ company while in New York. When the letters which passed between Jernegan, Phelan and Fisher are taken into consideration, the officers of the company think they can understand who are referred to by the heretofore mysterious initials in these letters, which are claimed to be evidence of the crookedness of the scheme.”

Well might the officers have given pause with all these peculiar actions.

A few articles back, mention was made of the death of Fisher in New South Wales in 1900. It is commonly believed that Fisher, himself, put this notice of his own death in the papers. Then he was free to roam about without so much danger of detection. Far from being interred in Australia, where could he have gone.
