Steffy relocated to Texas A&M University with the INA after the Cyprus war of 1974. He trained a generation of students in his methods and employed them on future projects, most notably the reconstruction of the 11th-century wreck at Serçe Limanı. His publication of the Kyrenia ship in the American Journal of Archaeology in 1985 established a benchmark not only in the study of ancient ships, but in the validity of the kind of analysis he pioneered. His analysis of the Kyrenia, Yassıada and Serçe Limanı hulls formed the basic timeline around which research on ancient Mediterranean shipbuilding is organized, although he would be the first to point out that the reality of shipbuilding is a much messier and more complicated process than most theoreticians would like to think.

LEGACY

Katzev and Steffy, in their excavation, analysis and reconstruction of the Kyrenia ship, took a major leap forward in the development of the theoretical and methodological tools for the study of ancient seafaring. Their unique viewpoints, creative thought processes and rigorous attention to detail made it possible for what was then dismissively referred to as underwater archaeology or, even worse, wreck diving, to become a scientific endeavour worthy of professional scholarly consideration.
