“Out of the way,” commanded Weir as he entered Havless Tower from atop the southern allures. A knot of soldiers that had gathered there immediately parted to let him through. Galager and Ada were just a step behind. The trio plunged straight ahead, into the stairway that would lead them down to Hadron’s abode. They could hear sounds below, shouting and screaming. It sounded like a small riot down there. Galager heard Roln’s name mentioned, but didn’t know why.

Pangs of anxiety shot through him as the trio descended. The last time he had run down these stairs, a crack o’ dust had risen past him and his master was dying with his throat cut. What was happening now? Another ogre? Another dust?

They finally reached the entrance for Hadron’s quarters. To Galager’s dismay the disturbance originated from within. Weir pushed aside several soldiers who were gathered on the small platform inside Hadron’s chamber. Galager and Ada muscled their way in right behind him, almost knocking one of the fellows onto the floor below—Boson Rheev.

Galager saw soldiers. About ten of them. They were struggling with a single individual within Hadron’s chamber who was determined to break free of their collective grasp. Much of the furniture had been knocked aside, smashed, or was lying upside down on the floor. Even one of the tall cupboards had been pulled over. It took Galager a moment to realize it was Roln these men were desperately trying to subdue. The rampaging lad suddenly broke free from the grasps of several men. He howled once, then kicked over another table, sending more items flying everywhere. Roln stepped onto some of them—the godevil pieces. He slipped, fell to the floor, and writhed in agony. His arms and legs flailed in all directions.

“What’s wrong with him?” cried Ada over the racket.

Four of the soldiers renewed their efforts and fell back onto their friend, attempting to pin him to the floor. But the uncontrollable lad somehow squirmed away and was on his feet again. Roln abruptly turned to Ada and Galager, eyes red and bulging, facial features contorted, and he screamed.

Roln’s tunic was in tatters. A small red gash could be seen on his exposed chest where a trickle of blood ran down to his bared navel. His hands flew to his skull. He hooked fingers into his hair, then after yet another baleful wail he began pulling patches of it from his scalp. Galager and the others gasped, appalled. More soldiers tackled him now, forcing him to the floor yet again. But from within the pile of arms and legs, one arm snaked outward with an open hand reaching upward, a tuft of hair still caught between his tortured fingers.

Weir spun around, his volcanic eyes on Galager.

“Your eludria, where is it?”

He speared Ada with the same hot look and demanded to see her talisman. A sense of dread passed up Galager’s spine. Ada quickly produced her ruby and showed it to Weir, and then the vangard’s blistering face was again on him.
