PLAN 17: Sun Temple, Ruins Road

This structure bears some similarities to other structures visited on the Grand Circle Tour, such as Horseshoe House in Hovenweep (see page 210), also D-shaped with a double wall and enclosed kivas, though part of one side is open. There is no evidence of any roof, so it must have been open to the sky but no artifacts were found in the structure and some archaeologists think the building was never finished, which could also explain the lack of a roof. But there seems to be no doubt that it was constructed for religious purposes, even if it was never used.

This is the last site to visit on Ruins Road, so follow the road back past the turnoff for Cliff Palace to the four corners and go straight toward the museum. If you have brought along lunch, look for the large picnic area set among the trees along some narrow dirt roads on the right just past the four corners. There is also a small restaurant past the museum on the left. In this section are the museum and trailhead for Spruce Tree House.

The museum is on the right across from the parking lot. As with other national parks, there is an acute shortage of parking space and it can be nearly impossible to find anything near the museum, so you might have to circle a few times. There is some space near the picnic area and it is not too far to walk.
